South Bruce Grey Health Centre Service Reductions
December 21, 2021
On December 20, 2021, the South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) released a news bulletin regarding modifications that they are forced to make due to shortages in nursing support in their hospitals. Due to the decreased availability of nursing staff as a result of the pandemic SBGHC will be modifying the Walkerton Hospital Emergency Department hours by eliminating the overnight emergency hours (8:00pm to 8:00am) and operating only from 8:00am to 8:00pm each day starting on December 27, 2021. Since 2019, the Chesley Hospital has also been subject to the same restrictions. This will continue to result in residents that are needing overnight emergency care to have to venture to other hospitals and for our emergency responders to also take patients further afield. Also, the Chesley Hospital’s Inpatient Care Unit will be converted to an Alternate Level of Care Unit as these types of beds will allow for an alternate staffing model to be used with less registered nurses required.
Arran-Elderslie Council will be holding a Special Council Meeting on Wednesday December 22, 2021 at 1:00pm to discuss this matter. They will be reviewing options such as requesting assistance from the Province to look at alternative options rather than reducing hours and modifying units/beds.
